A Few Things I'll Never Forget

Dear Madison,

Ever since your eighth birthday a few weeks ago, I've had memories floating to the surface--memories from 8 years ago until now and in between--yet they all seem like yesterday.....

For example, when you were a cute, tiny, pink newborn. You were our first baby, and the first grand-baby as well! You brought such excitement for your entire family! You always had someone holding you, smiling at you, spoiling you...some of my favorite memories are during the first 6 weeks of your life when I was on maternity leave from school, when I got to sit and hold you and play with you all day and do nothing else! It was just you and me! I was so sad when I had to go back to work, I blinked back tears at school for days--but I was happy because you got to be at home with Dad a lot of the time while I was gone, and I knew he was keeping you just as happy. And Grandma kept you happy the rest of the time. The newborn days were so short but so sweet!

Playgroup days were so fun! Whenever I think about you and your cute friends (plus Emma since she got to tag along most of the time), playing and learning like 3-year-olds do, I just smile. It was so fun watching you go all over the place together--to farms, airports, fire stations, grocery stores, and everywhere....Don't you wish you could go back and do it all again? I wish you could, just to see my 3-year-old Madison again!

This is your first day of Kindergarten. I put you on the bus and then followed the bus to school and watched you walk inside (since you wouldn't let me take you in myself) and then I cried the whole way home. You looked so tiny to be going to school already. Now you look so big--how did that happen so fast?

And here you are, eight years old, on your Baptism day! This day will float up in my memories forever as one of the best! You counted down the days for weeks, and finally it was here! We had your hair done so pretty (thanks Amber!) and you twirled around in your beautiful dress all day. We had pictures to take (thanks Steph!) and food to prepare, but also time to just relax and enjoy the morning. It was sunny and warm outside and the flowers that Dad bought for you made it seem even more like Spring.

Emma was as excited as you were, I think! She watched everything that you did and imagined her own baptism day to be exactly the same! She said "I'm even going to be extra nice to you from now on so that you can Choose the Right and not fight with me." I am so glad you and Emma have each other and can be such good friends.

And Isaac just knew it was going to be a fun day!

Almost all of your aunts, uncles, and cousins were there, your Primary leaders and teachers and lots of your friends! Aunt Pam played the piano, Mylan sang so beautifully, Katie and Uncle Eric gave talks, Grandma and I said prayers, and Dad baptised and confirmed you. And everyone else just filled the room up with love, which is why my tears wouldn't go away. (Thank you, everyone!)

I wish I had thought to take a picture of you with your friends before Rylie left! But we remembered right at the end so Julisha, Lindsey, and Sydney stopped by our house just long enough to get a picture. Did you notice that these four good friends are the same ones from the Playgroup days? Wow, how time flies!

These are just a few of the things I'll never forget. I guess it's allright that you're growing up so fast, only because I am more and more proud of you the older you get. I can tell you already have the beginnings of a strong testimony that will grow and grow along with you. You have always been such a good example to us, but especially on your baptism day. Just watching your excitement reminded me of how blessed we are to be members of the only true church! Thank you for your good example, for making us laugh, for putting up with us as we try this parenting thing out on you....and for just being you! I love you!

The Little People in My Life

Kids keep life interesting! I'm especially grateful for their entertainment lately! I know this isn't the greatest picture of them but I had to post it to remind myself of the moment. The girls were dancing, PJ's and feather boas (falling apart), and Isaac was trying to keep up. I couldn't do it justice with the camera.

Here's a few things that Isaac has been up to lately:

1) Nursery--has been going HORRIBLY since the beginning of the year when he got switched to the older kid nursery. Then the last two weeks, all the sudden out of the blue, he decided it was great fun! Now he can't wait to get back there and "pay toys". As soon as the people start filing out of the chapel, he bolts for the nearest exit saying, "Bye, Bye momma! Bye! Bye!" and I try to catch him before he gets lost down the hall.

2) The toilet obsession is getting a little better (although he did try to flush a large rubber bouncy ball down the other day and it got stuck very tightly in the round hole, so I got to stick my whole arm in up to my elbow and pry it out) HOWEVER, the obsession with vents is getting worse. We have found balls, trucks, blocks, KEYS (like our real car keys), food, sippy cups, etc, etc, etc...down the vents. So much fun!

3) He knows how to get his clothes off now, so he is ALWAYS naked on the bottom half, sometimes on top as well (refer to the first picture). It hasn't occurred to him to take his diaper off yet, thank goodness!

4) He likes to pose for the camera. He brought it to me the other day, saying "Cheeeeese" over and over. He kept pulling faces and I kept snapping pictures. What a funny boy he is!

Emma just started taking art lessons, which she LOVES. It is funny becuase before art lessons she NEVER drew pictures, never colored, had no interest in anything art. But then Madison signed up for art and brought home this really cool art set with tons of cool stuff in it. So Emma begged and begged to take art lessons with Madison. I finally signed her up, and all the sudden she is such a proud, blooming artist! She draws such cute little pictures lately. Out of the two of them--Emma is the one that LISTENS and tries to learn something at lessons. Madison, on the other hand, has reverted back to tracing everything, and spends most of her lesson goofing off.

The other day Emma was watching some show where a guy got hit with a ball in-between the legs.....she laughed hysterically and finally said "Oh, that was SOOO funny, that guy got hit right in the tenders!" Where she got that term I don't know, but now (unfortunately) it's become a frequently used word at our house....

And Madison is off in her own little world sometimes. I swear I've never seen so much attitude in her--rolling the eyes, ignoring everyone, talking back, etc. She's still a sweetheart all in all, but sometimes I see a little glimpse of what's coming in a few years. The other night Kelly wanted to look at something in her new set of scriptures so he told her to go get them. I could tell she had something else on her mind and she was just trying to be done as fast as possible with whatever he wanted....so she ran off and brought back Emma and Isaac's little book of Mormons. Kelly said "No, go get YOUR scriptures," so she sighed a BIG sigh, ran off, and brought back HIS scriptures. Finally Kelly grabbed her shoulders and said, "Madison I want YOUR set of scriptures, the brand new ones--bring me YOUR set!" And Madison goes, "Well gosh, why didn't you just TELL me that?!?" Kelly and I just looked at each other and rolled our eyes while she rolled hers.

Kids are so fun! Wouldn't life be boring without them!

It's ABOUT time.....

.....I quit slacking and write something! The top two reasons that I'm such a slacker with my blog are: 1) either there is NOTHING to write about or 2) there is so much to write about that I don't have time to write since things are so crazy! January fell under #1--boring, depressing, freezing,ect....then in February, life dramatically lurched into the #2 category! But I like crazy a lot better than boring/depressing! Here are some of the things that have kept us busy:

MONSTER CONCERT
I don't have any pictures yet (I know I have issues with forgetting my camera and I'm working on it) but I wanted to just document what a totally fun event this is! It's not your ordinary piano recital! Instead of ONE piano with ONE performer, they cram around 20 pianos on the stage and put 2 or 3 students on each one, all playing the same duet simultaneously! Duets are awesome anyway because you can take two pretty simple parts and put them together to make a much cooler, more difficult sounding song! But when you have 40+ people all playing the duet at the same time, it's just really LOUD and exciting and fun. Plus there is no nervousness about this recital--with that many students playing, one or two small mistakes will go un-noticed. Many of the students play a piece, take a bow, and then join another group and perform another piece. Besides all the fun just performing, you're treated to a lot of (cheesy) skits sporatically performed during the concert by a big hairy monster (thus the name) and other members of the USU YC staff. It's just a lot of fun and I just love it.

So as a child I performed in the Monster Concert every year, and now I watch my own students participate every year. I'm always just a tad jealous of them because I want to be up there on the stage having fun instead of watching! Well THIS year, I worked my way back up there. I volunteered to be a "beat keeper" (a person who helps the little short kids who can't see the conductor to follow the conductor's beat) so I did that for half of the time. But the other half (mostly on the most difficult pieces, which made it even more fun) my piano was empty so I got to join the piano majors and play along. It was like being a kid all over again!

I did miss seeing my students perform......and I especially missed seeing Madison perform....and then to top if off I forgot my camera! But I'm sure they all did great and there's always next year! I'll make sure I assign someone to be the photographer while I play with the kids up on the stage!


MATT'S WEDDING
No pictures again. (L-O-S-E-R) It was a really fun day! My mother and father in law flew in from Wyoming to join the festivities and it was really good to see them. Actually, all of Kelly's brothers/sister and their spouses were there in the temple for the wedding. It was so awesome to look around and see EVERYONE! I can't wait until my brothers get married (any day now.....) and we can all go to the temple together like that. It was a little piece of heaven.

My nephew Matt looked SOOOO happy, as did his new wife, Shula. We had a little luncheon afterwards and played with cousins until the reception. The church house (where the reception was held) was decorated beautifully. Matt and Shula took charge and planned almost everything, I heard. They knew what they were doing! They strung rows and rows of lights across the ceiling and then left all the other lights out....very romantic! They had floating candles on the tables that were lit, very pretty chair covers, the cake was beautiful, Shula looked beautiful, yummy ecclairs.....and the music suited the happy couple as well. It reminded me of the little bands that play on the cruise ships. Anyway, Dawn got lots of pictures. :) Good thing. Thanks for a fun day Matt and Shula (and Dawn)!

And finally, MADISON'S BIRTHDAY!
Wow, it has been a busy week for me and a fun one for Madison! First we had a Valentine's Dinner at my mom's house (which was very fun) and we celebrated Madi's birthday with my family. Then a couple days later, on her birthday, we had our own little party at home. She chose spaghetti, breadsticks, and salad for dinner. Then we had cake and ice cream, opened presents, etc. Keep in mind that the whole day was a party for her--at school she wore the birthday hat all day and her friends sang to her every chance they got.....so by the end of the night, I asked her, have you had a fun birthday? She looked tired, but said "The best one ever!"

We waited for the weekend to have her friends party. She wanted to have a "P" party--pajamas and pizza. So that is what we did. I was grateful for something halfway simple! This picture is her friends yelling "I scream, we scream, we all scream for ice cream!" Wow, can I tell you--they can all scream really loud! Their Happy Birthday to You (cha cha cha) song left my ears ringing for quite some time. But they had fun! What a cute bunch of friends Madison has, and I'm so grateful! They are all such good examples for each other.

She just looks so darn grown up. She's EIGHT! I feel old. But I'm so proud of her. She got her first set of scriptures for her birthday, and immediately had to go pick out a cute case for them. She has taken such good care of them and says they are her favorite, most special gift. Several times a day I find her reading them. What a good example to me!

Happy Birthday Madison! Thanks for being the best older sister ever, for making us laugh, for all of your energy and smiles, for your great example! We love you!
